Three years ago I bought a 4TB Samsung external SSD from Best Buy for $328. I thought that was expensive, but I needed it.
But that same drive today, at the same place, is over $1000.
And I still think that is expensive ;-)
But at least they have it in stock for local pickup, and you get a $100 gift card with purchase.
And yes, I noticed that the monthly payment ends in .42 cents.

$328 might be a lot, but that seems to be about double the cost of a mechanical 4TB disk about a decade ago. Not that bad!
(The >$1000 price is bonkers though).
Btw is an external SSD a good idea?
I.E. from the little I’ve read about SSDs is that they tend to suffer from random bit rot. A mechanical disk will either just work or you will 100% for sure know that it’s gone bad. To some extent that seems better in some use cases perhaps?
Laptop user. :-) I travel with THREE external USB-C drives, and the laptop has a 2TB SSD.
Yikes – hard pass.
My poor Synology has been alerting me about low storage for months. When I upgraded last time, I went to the next size up. I did not want to trust a drive “too large.” I regret that decision! Hindsight is 20/20.
